And does your hope cross over into blind trusting? 'Cause mine sure as hell don't.

So you're, what, a surgeon? Fireman? Probably not a cop from that hope/blind-trust but.

Far from blind trusting. Time isn't passing at home while we're here, you know; we're outside ordinary dimensions. I'm simply giving them a chance.

None of the above. I'm a Watcher. [A moment's pause as he decides how to explain this in a way least likely to get him called insane by a normal person. It's not easy.] You might consider me a sort of... occult librarian. I aid in the fight against the forces of darkness that wish to overtake humanity. That is, demonic forces.

[Giles has a little bit of a dramatic streak when it comes to fighting evil. Yeah.]

[...You know he'll buy that. the dimension thing, the time-stopped thing. Sure, sounds legit.] So I guess you guys have all the time in the world to hope someones gonna pour their damn heart out on you.

[yep he's okay with that too. This guy = Ikutsuki. ] Gotcha. Act as support to the team fighting, I take it? Go through the info they bring back?

[Oh good, otherwise he'd have to break out more exposition, and that would get long.] It's only fair to have equally as much time as our assignments. Rushing someone's change of heart rarely works.

[Dude he's way more badass than Ikutsuki. It's just very secretly badass.] For the most part, yes, although it seems to involve far more being knocked about the head than anyone warned me for when I signed up. [He says this blithely, which is the way he always tells jokes.] In an ideal world I provide informational support, but when needs must I get my hands dirty.

[A short, neutral noise of acknowledgement. You can tell how much interest he has in actually discussing the whole 'change of heart' thing. Far more interesting is the second comment Giles makes.]

[and he needs to demonstrate it on the boat, clearly. Wrassle a shark.] I'd think anything involving 'fighting forces of darkness' or whatever the hell'll involve getting knocked about a good bit.

What is it you were fighting?

[That's fine, Giles isn't a particularly good therapist, anyway.]

[Shark wrassling is so not on the menu, but if you want a vampire mercilessly staked, you know who to call.]
That is a reasonable assumption, but my role is really traditionally in the library, far removed from any fighting. Most Watchers take a... hands off approach. One I entirely disagree with. [He can't help the way his voice sharpens a little on the last sentence; it's a point of some contention in his life.]

I was literal when I said demonic forces. That is, I assist the Slayer in disposing of demons that -- that prey upon their peacefully ignorant human victims, in a truly gruesome variety of ways.

...So what, most've 'em just watch shit unfold and don't do anything about it? [If so, he can share in the distaste, the disapproval there evident.] Kinda worthless, if so.

Is it something only the slayer can do? [Hey, parallels.] And... when you say gruesome, they rip 'em apart or something, sounds like.

For the most part? Yes, [he says sourly.] I have little doubt it's contributed to the generally short lifespan of their Slayers.

Anyone can, and does, but the Slayer has inhuman strength, speed, and skill. She is the... ah, the 'boogie man' of the demonic world. Ripping apart is the tip of the iceberg of what demons can do.

...Yeah, that's pretty worthless.

So it goes past physical damage, I take it.

I've always thought so.

Yes. [There's a quieter tone as he says this.] Some of them were once human, or are as intelligent or more, and they delight in seeing the suffering of their victims. They can be... creative.
